Frequently asked questions, and their answers
1. WHAT IS COACHING?
Coaching is a new profession for a new social structure
A Coach will:
- Help people (and businesses) better set goals and then reach those goals.
- Help make the road to such goals more enjoyable.
- Ask clients to do more than they would have done on their own.
- Help clients focus better, more quickly to produce results.
- Provide the tools, support, structure and strategies to accomplish more.
2. - HOW IS COACHING DIFFERENT FROM CONSULTING, THERAPY, SPORTS COACHING OR A BEST FRIEND?
Consulting.
Coaching is a often confused with consulting. But it is quite different as the Coach does NOT recommend solutions, the Coach and stays by the Client to help implement the new skills, changes and goals to make sure they really happen.
Therapy.
Coaching is not therapy. We don't work on "issues" or past human behavioural problems. We leave that up to the Client to know about and fix, possibly with the help of other specialists. We help them to move forward and set personal and professional goals that will give them the life they really want.
Sports.
Coaching includes several principles from sports coaching.. such as ‘teamwork’, ‘going for the goal’, ‘being your best’. But unlike sports coaching, most professional coaching is not competition or win/lose based. It strengthens the clients’ skills rather than help them beat the other team. It's win/win.
Best friend.
A best friend is wonderful to have. but is your best friend a professional whom you will trust to work with you objectively on the most important aspects of your life, and/or business?
Have a best friend and a Coach.
3. WHAT IS THE BASIC PHILOSOPHY OF COACHING?
It is simple. Very simple:
Each of us is a potential masterpiece. At some point we are all discovering what we really want, and we can get what we want faster and easier by having a Coach who can help us with professional skills, tools and an outside perspective.
4. WHO HIRES A COACH AND WHY?
People of all ages and from all walks of life use coaches to assist them at some point:
Private individuals looking to make life changes or re-format their life that has become bogged down.
Senior business people complaining of isolation at the top.
Entrepreneurs who are starting out.
Casualties from redundancy programmes.
Artistic talents suffering from creative block.
Students unsure as to which direction to move.
People returning to normality after a trauma.
Inquiring people who want to work out a new business idea or theory in total confidence.
People who need to manage their time, and other resources better.
Professionals who have lost perspective through overwork.
Women returning to the job market.
All find value, challenge and comfort in a risk-free and totally confidential coaching relationship.
They want more.
They want to grow.
They want to explore ways of making their lives easier, more efficient.
Our Clients get all three. Quickly.
5. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HIRE A COACH?
Many things, but the most important are:
You take yourself more seriously.
You take more effective and focused actions immediately.
You stop putting up with what is dragging you down.
You create momentum, so it's easier to get results.
You set better goals than you might have done without a Coach.
6. DOES THE COACH WORK ON PERSONAL GOALS OR BUSINESS/PROFESSIONAL GOALS?
Both. And, with the line between personal and business life blurring more and more, a Coach is the only professional trained to work with all aspects of you.
7. WHERE DOES THE COACH FOCUS WITH AN AVERAGE CLIENT?
I focus where clients need me most but I tend to weave in the following discussions:
- Getting clients' Personal Foundation strengthened.
- Helping clients increase their Reserve
- Helping clients set goals based on their Personal Values.
By combining these with what clients want from me, I help them have fewer problems and focus on what is going to make them the most successful. I find that they really enjoy this approach plus that of being unconditionally supported - something they don’t necessarily get consistently from their spouses, partners, colleagues or friends.
8. WHY DOES COACHING WORK?
Coaching works for several reasons:
Synergy between Coach and Client creates momentum.
Better goals are set -- ones that naturally pull the Client towards the goal rather than those requiring the Client to do the pushing.
The Client develops new skills and these skills translate into more success.
9. WHY IS COACHING BECOMING POPULAR?
1. Many people are tired of doing what they "should" do and are ready to do something special and meaningful for the rest of their lives. The problem is, some of them can't see it, or if they can, they can't work out how to re-orient their life around it. A Coach can help them do both.
2. People are realizing how simple it can be to accomplish something that several years ago might have felt out of reach or like a pipe-dream. A Coach is not a miracle worker but we do have a large ‘tool kit’ to help the Big Idea become a Reality. Fortunately, people now put more time and resources to invest in themselves in this kind of growth.
3. Spirituality. An increasing number of people are willing to look at, and consider, the notion of spirituality. In fact, many coaches are spiritually based -- even the ones who coach our largest companies. Our definition of spirituality is how connected you are with yourself, with others, with Nature and, perhaps, with God. As Coaches we help clients to tune in better to themselves and others.
10. PLEASE, GIVE ME SOME CONTEXT ABOUT COACHING.
A Personal Coach does just what an Athletics Coach or Music Teacher does, only in a more complete and bigger way. A Coach challenges you and takes the time to find out what winning in life means to you.
A Coach is your partner in living the life you know you can accomplish, personally and professionally.
A Coach is someone to hold you accountable for your life, to make sure you really do live up to your potential.
No matter where you are in life, there is always a desire for more. More success, more money, closer relationships, a deeper feeling of meaning in life, etc. It is the nature of people to want to attain more, become more, be more, and we all struggle with how to get what we're looking for.
Many people believe that "hard work and doing it on your own" are the keys to finding the life, success, money, or happiness that they seek. They believe that a price must be paid to attain what they want, but often that price can be poor health, not having enough time to enjoy life, strained family relationships or lessened productivity. The saddest part is that, even though this effort may result in more of something, it is often not the something you had in mind, and you are back where you started or worse, further away from your real intentions.
Athletes and performers know about this trap. They know they need someone else, a trained person to help them set goals, discover real needs, and work effectively toward ultimate goals of excellence. So, they are willing to hire a Coach. No serious athlete or musician would expect to progress very far without one.
11. WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY DOING VERY WELL IN THEIR LIVES, WHY DO THEY NEED A COACH?
They might not need a Coach. But it could be helpful to find out:
Are they doing what they most enjoy?
Are they tolerating anything?
Is life easy enough?
Are they going to be financially independent within the next 5 years?
Do they have what they most want?
Often, people need to expect more out of their lives. A Coach can help in this process.
12. CAN A DEPENDENCY BE CREATED BETWEEN COACH AND CLIENT?
Not really. The Client may "need" the Coach in order to maximize an opportunity or accelerate personal growth, yet not be "dependent" on the Coach. Anyone who is developing can always benefit from structure, advice, support and even someone discreet to share triumphs with. So in that sense, the Coach is at least helpful, but an emotional or psychological dependency is not created. The Coach works with people who are strong enough on their own. We are not resolving issues as therapists would and make no claims as such.
Essentially the Coach is helping the Client to create a better future: to have more success, more money, and a higher quality of life.
13. CAN COACHING HURT SOMEONE?
No. We are not undertaking any psychological work. We're not trying to control the client's thinking. We're not cattle prods; we are partners.
14. CAN I HIRE A COACH JUST FOR A SHORT-TERM, SPECIAL PROJECT?
Yes. Clients initially hire a Coach to accomplish specific goals or projects. Very often, however, a Client continues to work with a Coach after that because there are even more interesting things to accomplish.
15. HOW LONG MUST I COMMIT IF I START WORKING WITH A COACH?
Most coaches suggest a three to six month commitment, as this is the way to enter the relationship seriously and allow you to fully feel the effects of Coaching. Some coaches offer a written contract to clarify the nature and limits of the service.
For corporate clients, a signed contract is simply good business.
16. WHAT DOES IT COST TO HIRE A COACH-for-EDUCATOR COACH?
For educational clients the fees are 50 euros per hour, charged in advance in blocks of five hours. This usually means one intensive 55 minutes Skype call per week, and can vary with circumstances.
17. WHAT’S YOUR OWN PERSONAL APPROACH TO COACHING?
" I Coach, You Win ! "
I aim to rapidly effect positive changes in my clients’ success patterns and feelings of well-being.
As a confidential sounding-board and as a creative and practical resource, the coach's central objective is always to help people become more fulfilled & productive.
18. WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP NOW?
Contact the coach of your choice for a free initial Skype meeting so that you can find out whether their type of coaching is suitable for you.
